Mad About Art Weekend Workshop
“MAD ABOUT ART” is a painting workshop weekend organised by renowned artist Simon Hemsley. The workshop is to be held in the picturesque surroundings of Wildwood Valley. The event will take place from Friday, June 14th, to Sunday, June 16th, 2024. Simon is the artist in residence.
The workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. Simon covers the fundamentals of expressive drawing, as well as demonstrates more advanced approaches to the subject matter. He will mainly use watercolour; the fundamentals of this workshop can apply to all mediums.
The following topics will be covered in the workshop:
1. Fundamentals of drawing
2. Design and composition
3. Light and dark, tonal understanding
4. Reflected light
5. Embracing your mistakes
6. Juxtaposing opposites – the Yin and Yang of painting
7. Use of highlights
8. Making your paint
You need to bring your paints, paper, or boards that you are comfortable using. The organizers will provide acid-free cartridge paper and charcoal for drawing. A materials list will be sent closer to the workshop.
The workshop weekend includes a Friday evening demonstration from Simon, outlining the weekend’s activities, followed by a welcome dinner. Morning tea will be served on Saturday, and a working lunch on Saturday and morning tea on Sunday.
The cost of the workshop is $395.00.
A bit about Simon:
Simon Hemsley has been painting for the past 40 years. Initially, he mainly used watercolour, but he has now branched out to acrylic and oils, often incorporating watercolour techniques into these mediums. He is a tutor in anatomy for the Rural Clinical Medical School, using the works of the old masters to bring anatomy to life. He also coordinates a life drawing group in Bunbury and ran an anatomy and life drawing summer school workshop in January this year.
